What to Expect During a Prostate MRI Scan

If you’ve never had a prostate MRI, it can sound a bit intimidating. Traditionally, prostate screening relied on the digital rectal exam — today typically seen as outdated and inferior to modern imaging tools such as prostate MRI. Knowing what to expect helps you ask the right questions and advocate for your health.

What is a prostate MRI scan?

A prostate MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves — no radiation — to create detailed images of the prostate gland and surrounding tissue. The exam identifies suspicious lesions precisely, so a biopsy can either be avoided or targeted exactly where it matters.

During the exam

You’ll lie comfortably on the padded table. The scanner makes knocking sounds — hearing protection is provided, and the technologist stays in constant contact. The exam typically takes 30–45 minutes. Our wider-bore MRI units keep the experience as comfortable as possible.

After the exam

Dr. Michael J. Hicks, an expert in prostate imaging trained at the University of Michigan, personally reads every prostate MRI performed at RMI. Your report appears in the patient portal, and your urologist receives the images needed to plan any next step.
