When a physician needs a sample, a fluid drained, or medication delivered to a precise location deep in the body, interventional radiology makes it possible without open surgery — using needles and catheters guided by live imaging.
Image-guided biopsies
For patients with suspected cancer, image-guided biopsy extracts a small tissue sample with a needle positioned exactly at the target using CT, ultrasound or fluoroscopy — providing laboratory answers through a pinhole rather than an incision.
Drainage procedures
Fluid collections — abscesses, cysts, seromas and other accumulations — can cause pain, fever and infection. Using image guidance, a thin catheter drains the collection safely, often avoiding more invasive surgery entirely.
Targeted injections
From joint aspirations to therapeutic injections, image-guided delivery puts treatment exactly where it’s needed — more effective, with fewer side effects. These outpatient procedures typically require only local anesthetic, and patients go home the same day.
