Prostate MRI is a complete game-changer for men at risk for prostate cancer. Instead of the “poke and hope” approach of a blind biopsy, prostate MRI precisely identifies suspicious lesions inside the prostate. If no lesion is present, patients can often safely avoid a biopsy altogether. If a biopsy is needed, your urologist can use the MRI to target the exact area of concern.

Why consider prostate MRI

  • The most accurate screening test for prostate cancer
  • Can distinguish between aggressive and slow-growing cancers
  • Can help you avoid an unnecessary biopsy — when used before biopsy, prostate MRI can reduce unnecessary biopsies by one-third
  • Recommended by the American Urological Association

Between 20–25% of non-MRI-guided prostate biopsies miss prostate cancer, and they underestimate disease severity in half of men whose cancers were classified as “slow growing.” MRI before biopsy changes that equation.

ACR Designated expertise

RMI’s Flint (Lennon Road) and Novi locations have earned the highest standard of prostate MRI imaging as American College of Radiology (ACR) Designated Prostate Cancer MRI Centers. Dr. Michael J. Hicks — an expert in prostate imaging trained at the University of Michigan — personally reads every prostate MRI performed at RMI and consults with you and your urologist about your findings and options.

Who should consider it

If two or more of the following apply to you, ask your physician about prostate MRI: age 65 or older, elevated PSA, abnormal digital rectal exam, family history of prostate cancer, African American heritage, overweight, or enlarged prostate.
