Ultrasound (sonography) uses sound waves — not radiation — to create real-time, full-motion images of the inside of your body. Think of it as a video camera that works with sound instead of light, capable of seeing blood flow, the fetal heartbeat and organ movement as they happen.

The ultrasound exams we offer

  • Abdominal and pelvic imaging
  • Thyroid, breast and testicular imaging
  • Obstetric ultrasound
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound, joint injections and aspirations (Southgate)
  • Liver, kidney and breast biopsy; thyroid and parotid fine-needle aspiration; cyst and seroma aspiration
  • Vascular studies: liver, kidney and aorta Doppler, peripheral arterial and venous studies, and carotid artery assessment

Why physicians choose ultrasound

Ultrasound is safe, quick, widely available and completely radiation-free — the preferred method for examining a fetus during pregnancy and an excellent first look for abdominal, thyroid and vascular questions. Because it captures motion, it’s ideal for evaluating blood flow and guiding needles during biopsies and aspirations.

Your exam is performed by registered sonographers and interpreted by RMI radiologists, with results in the patient portal as soon as they’re approved.
