Kyphoplasty Recovery Time: What to Expect After the Procedure

Recovering from kyphoplasty is often quicker and less disruptive than many people expect, especially compared to more invasive spine procedures and surgeries. Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive treatment used to stabilize spinal compression fractures, commonly caused by osteoporosis. The goal is to reduce pain by restoring vertebral height and reinforcing the bone with medical cement.

The first hours

In the first hour after kyphoplasty, patients are monitored in a recovery area while sedation wears off. It’s common to feel some soreness at the incision site or mild back discomfort — but many people also notice an early reduction in their fracture-related pain. Most patients go home the same day.

The first days

Over the first several days, soreness continues to fade. Light activity such as short walks is encouraged right away; strenuous lifting should wait for your physician’s clearance. Most patients can resume everyday routines within a few days.

Weeks after

Follow-up imaging confirms the fracture is stable. Your care team will discuss osteoporosis management — because treating the underlying bone health is essential to preventing future fractures.
